Thoughts on Maid carrying Soldiers Bag

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Recently, a lot of uproar has come on about a picture of a maid carrying a Singaporean soldiers bag. This immediately suffered a public backlash, with people calling that soldier "wimpy" and "weak", and several articles came out in the newspaper commenting on ALL Singaporean soldiers. I recall one article in Today said that soldiers nowadays had less motivation than in the past. I felt insulted by this. How much can you tell from one picture and a brief conversation with a soldier, as the author of the article mentioned. I felt that this was rather stereotypical.

Also, when I read that the NS man had received counselling, I felt that that was an invasion of privacy. Who are we to determine what each and every NS man should act like? I think that everyone should have the right to make their own choices. If that particular NS man feels like doing that, why not? Most people's conscience would help them make the better choice the next time, rather than the public. I felt that this issue was blown way out of proportion.

Also, I feel that when you put it into context with today's society, is such a thing all that shocking? In a country with several thousand maids, this kind of thing would eventually happen.

Anyway, in conclusion, I am not saying that what the NS man did was right, but I think that he himself should have made the decision to change, instead of the public. I mean, how comfortable can someone feel with someone holding his bag for him? I think that he would have eventually made the change himself, without all the public outcry.
